I’m thinking of taking Graphic Design and then 3D animation…
Do you know anything about these feilds? What’s the Demand out there for a person with these degrees?
Please let me know if you’re from Canada, US or otherwise.
I am from the US. And i might know something about this =P.
now that the easy answers are out of the way….
Graphic design and animation are two different fields. It really depends on what you are interested in. There is some overlap… but i don’t think as much as people think. Graphic design deals more with type and products.. more of a 2D media. It can range into 3D some.. but i would think the majority is 2D. While, animation is more 3D – in regards to movies, tv, or games. Now you could mean that you are using 3D in your 2D designs. Or you could mean you want to be a part of the 2D process at the beginning of 3D animation. You will have to be more clear about that. Both are very specific to the line of work you would want to do. Just get a strong art foundation.
Demand? Honestly, the market has become very flooded. More schools are offering degrees in these fields. There has been an upsurge in people looking for jobs in these fields in the last 5-8 years. Since more movies and games are using effects… more people would like to be a part of the 3D world. More advertising and internet use… .more people want to design. So both are very competitive fields.
If you are very talented.. and work hard. You could break into any company you would want to work for. A degree in either will not guarentee a job though. [actually it really depends what would make you happy. A small design house will be definately easier to get into than.. lets say.... Pixar for 3D]
Some advice:
Think about what excites you about both of these fields.. research a job that would match that desire. Then tailor make your skillsets and portfolio for that job. This will give you an edge against the competition. One thing to keep in mind… it is better to be specific. [ have a strong skill set] than to be a generalist [ a little experience in everything]…, so build a portfolio in that one skill set. [ie: type design..or 3D modeling.. or storyboarding]
